Streakin Amber gets the job done in the Evangeline Downs Futurity at Evangeline Downs

Opelousas, Louisiana –Streakin Amber ($3.20) gunned down long shot Red Hot Lass in deep stretch to win the $119,150 Evangeline Downs Futurity at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino on Saturday evening.

Streakin Amber broke outward sharply at the start and found herself almost two lengths behind leader Red Hot Lass thru the early stages before rallying strongly in the final 100 yards under jockey Gilbert Ortiz to win by a Π length. The running time for the 400 yards on a track labeled fast of 20.265 earned Streakin Amber a speed index of 95, equaling her career best.

“She had me worried” said Ortiz. “She didn’t break very well and I was fighting her during the early stages, but her class showed once I was able to get her to focus.”

Red Hot Lass held on for second in a determined effort, just in front of En Trepeins Jewel and Mr Clarks Perry. Shakeatea, the 3-1 second choice in the wagering was next across the finish line in fifth, followed by Dee Edge, McM Petfly, Fish for Dreams, and My Best of Six. Allaboard Austin was scratched.

Streakin Amber earned $59,575 for the victory, her fourth in as many starts for owner Arnold Trahan and trainer Heath Taylor. By top sire Streakin La Jolla out of the Dash for Cash mare Shirleys Dash, she was bred in Louisiana by Lee Hayes Jr.
