Val’s Warrior fastest qualifier for the Grade I (res) LQHBA Futurity at Evangeline Downs
Opelousas, Louisiana –Mary Lynne Thompson’s Vals Warrior ($9.40) recorded the fastest running time of the more than 160 Louisiana Bred juveniles who competed in a total of seventeen trials each worth $12,000 for the LQHBA Futurity, the richest race of the season, on Thursday, November 8 at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino. Vals Warrior, a Dashing Val colt out of the Osceola Warrior mare Daylight Magic, recorded his third career win in eight starts while covering the 400 yard distance in 20.261 on a track labeled fast. Trained by Larry Kopycinsky, he was one of three winners booted home by jockey Alfonso Lujan, (First Words & Dashin Bye, who earned berths in the final & consolation, respectively, the other two). The night’s 2nd fastest qualifier, Mon Ti Rose pulled off the biggest upset of the evening as she captured the 5th trial at odds of more than 50/1. Ninth & sixth in her two previous starts, the daughter of Dashin Bye put it all together with a clocking of 20.269 and rewarded her backers with a $107.20 win mutuel. Owned by Melba De La Cerda and trained by Manuel Vega Jr, she was ridden to victory by Cipriano Vidana. Other impressive qualifiers included Cute N Shiny & Toast With the Most, the former who overcame a troubled start under rider Danny Lavergne to edge the latter in the night’s 11th trial, and Picture Perfect Game, who outfinished fellow qualifier Marcys Dashin Bye in the 13th trial of the evening.
