Kentucky based Plaid and Delicate Dynamite set to square off in the $100,000 Matron Stakes at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino
Opelousas, Louisiana –Judy & J. Kirk Robison’s Plaid, the defending champion in this one mile event, takes on Delicate Dynamite and four others on Saturday evening in the $100,000 Matron Stakes for fillies & mares at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino. Plaid, currently based at Churchill Downs is a two-time stakes winner this year and most recently finished fourth in the Grade I Go For Wand Stakes at Saratoga in her last start. After racing close to the pace the six-year-old-daughter of Deputy Commander weakened late to finish nine lengths behind the runaway winner Ginger Punch. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the versatile six-year-old daughter of Deputy Commander has won on both grass and dirt and at five different racetracks while earning more than $350,000 during the last two seasons. Curt Bourque, the leading rider here at Evangeline Downs has the mount. Delicate Dynamite, who won three stakes in a row earlier this year including a victory over Plaid in the Goddess Stakes at Delta Downs in March, and Madison’s Music, a locally based state-bred who is undefeated in four starts in 2007 figure to offer the stiffest challenge to the top pick. Delicate Dynamite, a four-year-old daughter of Old Trieste has been freshened since finishing fourth, beaten seven lengths by multiple stakes winner Quite a Bride. Trained by Tom Amoss, who also will saddle Stormy Amber, Delicate Dynamite will be reunited with jockey Gerard Melancon who piloted her to those three stakes wins earlier this year. Madison’s Music, who has blossomed this season under the care of trainer Keith Bourgeois winning all four of her starts in front-running fashion including a dominating 11-length victory over state-breds in the J. Sebastien Memorial on Louisiana Legends Night on June 30. Although stepping up in class, the daughter of Prospector’s Music has this in her favor, she is on her home court, she is the controlling speed in a compact field, and she is in the best form of her career. Regular rider Kirk LeBlanc will be in from Louisiana Downs will ride. Carded as the 10th race on Saturday’s eleven-race program, the approximate post time is 10:14pm central time.
