Dreamsandvisions wins the $150,000 Evangeline Mile at Evangeline Downs
Opelousas, Louisiana –Dreamsandvisions ($15.00) captured the $150,000 Evangeline Mile in come-from-behind fashion Saturday evening at Evangeline Downs, recording the most lucrative win of his career. Ridden by Luis Quinonez, Dreamsandvisions trailed most of the way in the eight-horse field before rallying into prominence in the upper stretch, after finding room along the inside at the furlong pole, he accelerated to the front at the sixteenth pole en route to a one-length victory in the time of 1:38 3/5 on a track labeled fast. Biloxi Pride, the longest shot in the field at odds of 53-1, also staged a late rally to earn the runner-up spot under jockey Michael Wright. Stockholder, the race favorite at 2-1, tracked the early pacesetters, reached the front at the top of the stretch but couldn’t hold off the top two finishers. Stated winning rider Quinonez, “I wasn’t worried being last in the early stages as they were going at a solid clip and my horse was nice and relaxed, when I asked him to go at the 3/8th’s pole he immediately pinned his ears and went after them. At the top of the stretch I was behind a wall of horses and luckily a hole developed and I guided him to it and he did the rest. Once we found room, I was very confident; he’s a gritty, hard trying little horse.” Jockey Michael Wright, who almost pulled off the biggest upset in the history of the “mile” aboard Biloxi Pride, stated “even though the public didn’t think much of our chances, I was cautiously optimistic; I knew that trainer Ricky Bourque had him in peak health, this horse has always had ability but is just now reaching his full potential.” Making his stakes debut in the top handicap race on the circuit, Biloxi Pride earned $30,000 for owner Maurice Smith and rounded out a $221.60 exacta. Mauk Four, making his first start of the year, checked in fourth after dueling for the early lead thru fractions of 23 3/5, 46 2/5, and 1:11 2/5. Biloxi Breeze was fifth, followed by Watchem Smokey, High Strike Zone the 121 lb. highweight finished seventh and Salic Law was eighth. Dreamsandvisions has now won 7 of 17 starts and more than $300,000 for owner Sandra Duke and trainer Steven Duke. The Evangeline Mile was his second consecutive stakes win and fourth overall, all coming at different racetracks. Dreamsandvisions is four-year-old gelded son of Kipling out of the Dr. Adagio mare Nurse Linda K. He was bred in Texas by Luther Wicker.
