FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 5/19/07
Indigo Girl romps in the Tellike Stakes at Evangeline Downs
Opelousas, Louisiana –Displaying her high speed, odds-on favorite Indigo Girl ($3) just missed the track record for six furlongs en route to a wire-to-wire score in the $50,000 Tellike Stakes for fillies & mares at Evangeline Downs on Saturday evening. After establishing a clear lead in the early stages jockey Kerwin Clark was able to get the five-year-old Louisiana bred daughter of Leestown to relax thru splits of 21 4/5 & 45 and that proved the difference as she had plenty left in the tank when asked for her best approaching the top of the stretch, sprinting away from her rivals with a final quarter mile in 24 seconds while stopping the teletimer in 1:09 for the six furlongs on a track labeled fast. That clocking was the fastest of the meet and just one-fifth of a second off the track record set by Graded stakes winner High Strike Zone in 2006. Owned and bred in the pelican state by Randy Davis and Associates, Indigo Girl earned $30,000 for the victory and pushed her career earning to more than $465,000. Trained throughout her career by Sam Breaux, Indigo Girl has now won 13 of 26 lifetime starts. Olmosta, who trailed for the opening three furlongs, rallied strongly from that point to finish 2nd, more than seven lengths behind the winner but three lengths in front of Ada’s Dream, who weakened in the stretch after making a brief run at the winner approaching the homestretch. Cutie Sabrina was next in 4th, with Dazzling Dimples last in the five horse field. Summer Journey was a stakes scratch. Racing continues on a Wednesday through Saturday schedule with a post time of 6:20 p.m. central each evening. For more information contact Evangeline Downs at 337-594-3000.
